  3. Welcome to Virex with SpeedScan™ version 5.5.1.  Virex contains patent-pending SpeedScan technology to provide the fastest, most complete virus detection and repair available!

Virex version 5.5.1 is an update to version 5.5 that includes detection and repair of the NVP (No Vowel Prank) Trojan horse.  This Trojan horse has been found as an application named "New Look™2.1", which was placed on on-line services.  It is not known whether the Trojan appears with other names.

When launched, the Trojan horse application infects the currently active System file to keep the letters "a," "e," "i," "o," and "u" from being typed from the keyboard. This Trojan horse started as a prank called "No Vowels II", but has been distributed under other names without the means to reverse changes to the System file.  The infection can be propagated by executing the program containing the Trojan, but an infected System file will not spread the infection to other files.  Virex will detect and remove the NVP Trojan horse, as well as repair affected System files.

  9. Virex version 5.5.1 also includes a compatibility fix for PC Exchange version 2.02 users.

  14. This version of Virex includes native Power Macintosh support, a new installer, enhanced user interface and new features such as compressed file scanning, easier virus updating and scheduled scanning.

  16. Before installing Virex with SpeedScan version 5.5, please do the following:

  18. • REVIEW THE USER'S GUIDE
  19. There are many differences in operation between version 5.5 and previous Virex versions, including installation.  The User's Guide is your best source for information on version 5.5.

  21. • If you are a new Virex user, SEND IN YOUR REGISTRATION CARD
  22. Free technical support is available to registered Virex users, and registered users will be kept up to date on the latest virus and Virex information.

  25. Installation Notes

  27. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR VIREX INSTALLER DISKS ARE LOCKED!  A disk is locked when you can see through the tab in the upper right corner of the disk.

  29. Please review the installation instructions in the User's Guide.  The installer is new and operates differently than previous versions.

  31. The Installer does not save Virex preferences when updating from Virex versions earlier than 5.5.  You should reconfigure your Virex preferences after installing version 5.5 to optimize your protection.  Version 5.5 has a rich preferences set and an easy-to-use preferences interface.

  33. Administrators installing Virex on several Macintoshes can configure the preferences prior to installation.  Please see the User's Guide for details.

  36. Virex Administrator Users Note

Virex Administrator version1.0 will NOT work with Virex version 5.5.   Registered Virex Administrator users will automatically receive Virex Administrator  version 1.1.  Current Virex Administrator users who have not received version 1.1 should contact Datawatch customer service for a free upgrade to Virex Administrator version 1.1.
